The ascent of Kim Jong Un to the top spot in North Korea appeared on track Thursday as the country wrapped up two days of funeral events for Kim Jong Il.
State media has bestowed an ever increasing number of titles on Kim since his father’s death was announced on December 19.
It started the same day when the state-run KCNA news agency called him “great successor to the revolutionary cause of Juche and prominent leader of the [Workers’] party and the army and people of the DPRK.”
Over the following days the same phrase was repeated alongside the more formal “vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea.” Kim was also lauded as “outstanding leader of the Party, the army and the people.”
On December 24 things were turned up a notch when he went from “great successor” to “supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK” and “supreme leader of the DPRK.”
The last few days have seen variations including “vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and sagacious leader of the party, state and army of the DPRK” and “vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and supreme leader of the party, state and army.”
The elevations in title come in lieu of formal announcements in the media regarding promotions and new positions of authority that Kim is taking.
Kim Jong Il’s full title was “General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defence Commission of North Korea, and the supreme commander of the Korean People’s Army.”
